Hair Consultation (trichology)

At Clínica de Dermatologia Grupo Sofia Magina, the head of the Hair and Hair Transplant Unit is Dr. Filipa Osório, a dermatologist with differentiation in Trichology - a branch of Dermatology dedicated to the study of hair and scalp health. Since the scalp is part of the largest organ in our body, the skin, and hair is a differentiated structure produced by the skin of the scalp, all related complaints should be evaluated by a dermatologist with this differentiation. The problem that is affecting your scalp can affect other areas of the skin surface, which the dermatologist will also evaluate.

At the Hair Clinic we will perform a clinical and dermatoscopic (trichoscopic) evaluation of the scalp skin and hair. Dermatoscopy is the examination of skin lesions with a dermatoscope, a non-invasive medical device that magnifies the skin surface usually up to 70x. Trichoscopy is the dermatoscopy of the scalp and hair. The different types of alopecia (hair loss) and other dermatoses and tumors of the scalp are associated with certain trichoscopic findings that facilitate their diagnosis.

At each visit, in addition to the standard macroscopic photographs, we will take a computerized digital dermoscopy record (trichoscopy photographs), making it possible to monitor the evolution of the disease and the response to treatment in later visits, in a more objective way. It may be necessary to perform a scalp biopsy and send it for anatomopathological examination (histology). However, the use of trichoscopy often reduces the need for this examination.

In most cases of alopecia a laboratory study (analysis) will be necessary, either for diagnostic purposes (namely to exclude systemic causes of hair loss) or in order to institute the appropriate treatment. We therefore recommend that you bring along the latest analyses that you have performed. In case of suspicion of scalp infection (as in tinea or mycosis, caused by fungus), we will collect organic material for microbiological examination.

We will prescribe the appropriate treatment:

  1. To be performed outpatiently (in the home), including:
    a. Topical Treatment: Minoxidil, Clobetasol, Ketoconazole, among others;
    b. Oral Treatment: Spironolactone, Finasteride/Dutasteride, Minoxidil, Bicalutamide, Hydroxychloroquine, Methotrexate, Cyclosporine, Isotretinoin, Doxycycline, Prednisolone, Dexamethasone, among others;

  2. To be performed in the clinic, including:
    a. Hair Transplantation (Hair Implant);
    b. Platelet Rich Plasma;
    c. Intralesional corticosteroid injection.
